No, you do not need a referral from your physician to receive physical therapy evaluation and treatment. Maryland is by law a direct access state. This means that you can go to physical therapy directly without a physician referral for any musculoskeletal condition. As physical therapists, we are musculoskeletal specialists that will save you time and money as result of avoiding costly tests such as MRI's, and not having to endure wait times that will delay your recovery.
deBorja Physical Therapy is not in contract with any insurance companies. This enables us to give hands-on, one-on-one care for a full hour to speed up progress and performance. Other clinics may work with you at 2-4 patients per hour with limited time with your physical therapist.
The actual reimbursement that the clinic receives for these abbreviated sessions is only about half of what is billed to the insurance. Clinics may accept this rate under their contract with the insurance company. We believe in putting the client's needs first, providing exemplary care, and producing results in the most efficient manner possible. Being out of network with insurance companies enables us to do this.
As a free courtesy, we can check your Out-of-Network Benefits on your behalf by clicking the button bellow.
Yes, reimbursement from your insurance company is possible. The client is responsible for submitting claims to their insurance company. Instructions for this can be found on the insurance company's website.
In the case your insurance provides out-of-network benefits, we will give you a designated invoice upon request, that must be sent in with your insurance company's claim form.
We recommend that you speak with your insurance company directly to become knowledgeable on what their out-of-network benefits include.
Be sure to ask the following:
Treatment frequency is unique to each client and based on the findings of the initial evaluation, compliance with your recommended home program, and your goals. Generally, clients are seen 1-2/week. Visits are more frequent initially, then reduce over time as you progress toward your goals. Courses of care can range from a few visits to several months.
The duration ultimately is based on the complexity and severity of your condition and your long term goals. Your time is of utmost importance. We promise to use it wisely and not waste it with activities that can be done on your own.
The best thing to wear at your therapy visits is comfortable shorts and a T-shirt. For women, a sports bra, tank top, or bikini top may be helpful to allow visual assessment of your shoulders, posture, and neck. If you have long hair, bring a hair tie so that the therapist can observe and physically examine your neck. You may want to bring your therapy clothes to change into depending on your work and personal activities on the day of your scheduled visit.
Every comprehensive evaluation and therapy visit involves assessment of your movement patterns, your standing posture from the front, back, right and left sides, and palpation (skilled physical placement of the hands on your body to assess for areas such as tension, pain, thickness, impaired sensation, softness, and reactivity).
A direct care provider means that payment in the form of cash, check, credit, or health care savings account is due at the time of treatment.
As a direct care provider, deBorja Physical Therapy does not participate with or have a contract with any insurance company. By doing this, we can provide the best focused care possible to help you reach your goals.
The speed at which the physical problem is eased is completely dependent upon your age, how long you’ve had it, how severe it is, your participation in a the simple physical therapist-prescribed self treatment plan, and the manual skills of the therapist. Most often you will see and feel an improvement within the first 1-3 visits.
Your physical therapist will lift your concerns and ease your worries by telling you what’s going wrong during the first visit, provide you hands on care, insights, and more findings as you progress through your plan of care, and maintain ongoing open communication to seek your feedback with the hands on care.
Please check our Directions and Parking page here.
Payment is due at the time of service unless an alternative payment plan is arranged with your therapist. Payment is made securely via online invoice link sent to your email address or by payment taken by the clinic in person.

“I’ve been struggling with gluteal tendinitis for 3 years. I’ve seen two orthopedists, a pain doctor, PT, had an MRI, X-rays and nothing helped. I love to bike, hike and travel but I couldn’t do any of these things. Even going to a museum and walking around was too painful. I’m thrilled to say after working with Angie over the past two months, I went for a four mile hike today with no pain. It feels like a miracle. Angie is compassionate, skilled PT and MRT expert and spends time to listen and treat the whole person. She is phenomenal! I have hope again.”

“Extremely helpful, skilled, kind and patient! I went to work with Dr. deBorja, Angie, after being severely limited in terms of walking with any comfort and in being able to stand and move about comfortably for about a year. I did not have any expectations and I just wanted to get some mobility back. I was a bit nervous and had never worked with a physical therapist before and to my delight I was and am continually impressed by the knowledge and skill that Dr. Angie brings to the table, literally and figuratively...”

“I can not say enough good things about Angie deBorja. She is an amazing care giver. I am sure that isn't the right word, but it is. She truly cares about her patients and listens. She takes the time to see how your moving and doesn't just address the one thing you think hurts or is bothering you, she digs deeper to see where it starts from. I came to her first for myofascial release therapy for planter fasciitis and am basically pain free from that now.
We then moved into treating my bursitis and my body is feeling better then it has in years. 100% you should see her - you will not regret it!!”

“Seriously, we need to anoint Dr. Angie DeBorja as the patron saint of physical therapy. Over the past year-ish, l've had chronic back pain with unpredictable flareups. I had gone to two doctors and traditional PT all to still have a debilitating flareup afterwards.
I went to Dr. Angie pretty desperate and trying to figure out next steps. From day one, her approach was very inviting, and a couple of weeks later, the pain has significantly gone down and i feel like I have the right tools/techniques to continue using in the future.
Coming here is one of the best health investments ot my life and highly recommend you go to this practice. Additionally, the one-on-one therapy is such a game changer and i appreciate that greatly. "

"I'm in my early thirties and have been struggling with hamstring tendonitis for about 6-7 months that has prevented me from being active. I initially tried one of the big name physical therapy places and my injury only got worse - they were so focused on just strengthening my leg that they never did any work on the pain and discomfort I was feeling and kept mentioning. After months of pain crossing my legs, kneeling/squatting, the inability to sit still for more than minutes at a time, l found Angie. I immediately cancelled my remaining appointments with the other company. She explained right away that we would work to strengthen my leg, but only after she spent some time working to relive the tightness, discomfort, and pain. Angie is a miracle worker! Unlike other places where you're with a number of other people that can feel like a supervised gym class, Angie works one-on-one and develops a holistic personalized care plan. After every visit, she sent a detailed write-up of what we covered, things to do at home, and videos of her performing each move so I could follow along. She not only made me feel better but gave me the confidence to continue the work on my own. I have an upcoming international trip and have been concerned about my ability to sit still in cramped quarters for so many hours - but no longer! If you've been struggling with pain and are looking to get active again - reach out to Angie! I couldn't recommend her highly enough! "
